Tribute

From Janet Howe Trester on April 13th, 2011
I grew up 3 houses up from John; we knew his family for yrs..  He was the class clown in grade school, but really was very smart.  Nice guy.

From nedra Wilson on May 15th, 2011
John and I grew up together at St Mark's Lutheran Church. I would sometime see him at school but church is where we spent time together. Youth group, trips to the beach, fun times.
When his death was announced in church no one flinched as we have almost all new members. I feel apart.
Although I haven't seen John since high school I did keep intouch with his parents. They were generous supporters of the church.
John was a good guy.  He will be missed.

From Nedra Wilson on August 15th, 2011
I grew up going to church with John and his family. Every Sun.morn and youth group when we were old enough. He was kind to me and had many friends.  He was espcially proud of the time he spent on the ballfield with the band for AHS.

From Deedee Hildebrand on June 24th, 2011
My oldest friend, Mary Lou, always loved a good party and this reunion would have been no exception. I know she will be with us in spirit.

From Virginia Lawrence Wilkinson on July 14th, 2011
I remember Mary Lou so much from ASC.  I don't remember having any classes with her but we had a blast at ASC.  I especially remember the beach trip after graduation.  She was a beautiful person inside and out.  I know she is truly missed.

From Jimmy Johnson on July 22nd, 2011
Little did I know that the senior I had a crush on when I was a sophomore would end up being my sister-in-law.  You are dearly missed Lou.  I think about you every time I see a butterfly.

From Jennifer Jacobs on August 8th, 2011
Mary Louise was a special soul. She could make you feel you meant a lot to her & she reached out to a lot of people...She was quite a talented writer. I miss her still.

From Vivian Daniel Roberti on August 14th, 2011
Mary Lou and I were in the 3rd grade together and I remember her as the prettiest girl in Claxton.  She remained lovely inside and out for as long as I knew her, I feel sorrow whenever I think of her not being with us now.  She leaves a space no one else can fill.

From Leslie Long Vann on August 20th, 2011
The place where Mary Lou should be will always be a hole in our get togethers. Her wry sense of humor could make any moment lighter. Sure wish she could be with us.

From Danie Johnson on August 22nd, 2011
It was wonderful to read your thoughtful rememberances of Lou.  This month would have marked our thiry-seventh wedding anniversary and last month her fifty-ninth birthday.  The last thirteen years have often brought back fond memories of our twenty-four years together.  I and our three children are doing well--all three graduated from college, Megan and Sally both have two sons, Craig is in graduate school in architecture--we stay in touch with Lou's mom and brother--we were strengthened by the evperience and miss her--sorry I didn't get to see each of you--would love to hear from you--I'm in the book!--best, Danie Johnson

He wrote the formula for rocket fuel taking up all the black board and didn't get in trouble. Like me our teachers were amazed.

May he be remember as exceptional and be in peace.

From Annie Martin on March 10th, 2011
Image  We celebrated your life last Sunday, MO daddy! Lots of tales told on you by your friends and family. Sha, Maggie and Patrick organized an event that included a photo montage and your favorite music. Many of your old friends were there and some of your work buddies flew in to remember you fondly. We all acknowledged your intelligence, humor and caring heart. You are not forgotten.

From Jack Herbert on June 5th, 2011
Mike was truly one of the greatest friends I knew and kept in touch with him year to year.
I had the pleasure of staying with him several times in Colorado and met Sharon as well  prior to their marriage.
I remember him counting the days until retirement and I cursed him always with jealousy.
He will surely be missed by the masses who know him for his intensive wit and cleaverness.
Myself and Cleo were always the butt of  his deranged jokes which I will always remember.
I wish I could have said good bye but he will always be in my memories always.
Peace be with you always

From Debbie Mayfield (Price) on May 19th, 2011
Kent, am so sorry to read that Keith passed.  I went to school with both of you seemed like all through K-12.  He was so sweet and nice to me and just a great young man!!!  I know you will miss him greatly.  You probably don't remember me at all, but I just wanted to tell you I know what you and your family are going through.  I lost my Mom, Dad, brother and husband all to cancer within just a few years of each other.  God Bless You and all your family!   Debbie Mayfield (Price in HS).  I was best friends with Jeannean Reagan.  I live in Texas -- been here for 30 years.

From Virginia Lawrence Wilkinson on June 28th, 2011
I remember Keith and Kent from my early childhood. Mom would take us places since we didn't have drivers license. We stayed friends all during middle and  high school.  I loved Keith like a brother.  I am so sorry to hear of his much to early death.  All I can say is God has a wonderful guy and I look forward to seeing him in heaven.

From Ellen Keetch (Craig) on August 5th, 2011

I  also  remember  Keith,  from a class I  had  when  some  one  pelted  the  teacher  with  an erraser and  blamed it  on  me.  Ketih ,   who  sat  at  the  back  of  the  room  was  the  only  person  in the  class that  stood  up and  said   that  I  did  not  do it and  reported  the  person  that  did.    I  did not  know  him  well,  but  he  stood  up  for  me .

From John Miall on August 15th, 2011
I grew up a few houses down the street from the Self's...  I hardly remember a life without the Self's being part of it.  Though I didn't see Keith much in later life (he lived in Hawaii) his death was all too premature.  He was a kind and gentle soul.

From Leslie Long Vann on August 20th, 2011
The Self brothers will always be in my memory as two of the most genuine and kind guys in the high school. I regret that Keith was so far away that most of us haven't seen him since graduation. I am saddened to learn of his passing.

Eugene was that great combination of humor & energy & intelligence that makes for someone you can't help but remember...I saw him on his way out of town- unexpectedly- & felt sad that I'd probably never see him again. And now he's gone. Wish I knew what happened to him after Chapel Hill...

From laine barton on August 18th, 2011
I saw Eugene when he lived in NY.  We would meet in Chinatown for lunch.  He was auditioning for acting jobs and working part-time to cover the bills.  I'd heard he moved to Ohio.  I loved his energy, his creativity.
